The impetus for this support group happened when CASH ran an info event on housing co-ops. Some existing co-ops came and members contributed to an interesting discussion on collective decision making. Someone suggested that it would be great to meet more often to talk to people who live in different housing co-ops. CASH had already been running a research and training project to explore how we can make co-ops more inclusive so this felt like a natural evolution of this project.

You would think that housing co-ops do frequently communicate, being so similar but so different to the world around them. But they don’t. Housing co-ops can become islands, and knowledge can be lost about practices that work because of this.

So, we have been holding a surgery, going to different co-ops to discuss their ideas and problems. Members have been helping each other problem solve and we are building a bank of practices that are helpful for the movement.
